TGGLogo.gif (1084 bytes) InfoTrac CPS Client Application
Instructions for System Administrators

The Gale Group offers access to its online database service using a variety of client-server models. One of these involves the use of TGG's CPS (Cooperative Processing Software) client software. The program runs on the library's own Unix or VMS host, typically the same machine housing the library's OPAC application, and is reachable from terminal devices attached directly to the library host via LAN/WAN connections, or dialup facilities. It  a text-mode application, and includes facilities for managing a variety of terminal devices (DEC VT, Wyse, ADDS-VP, et al.) typically found on a library's OPAC network.

This document describes the implementation requirements for TGG's CPS program, and includes instructions for download and installation of the program suite.

Licensing and basic requirements Who may use CPS: Libraries with current TGG InfoTrac subscription contracts may utilize the CPS program to provide access to the InfoTrac databases. It is assumed that libraries will make a good faith effort to ensure that only members of their user community (as specified by contract) are allowed access to the application. Most OPAC suites include facilities for checking the identity of remote patrons; other methods might include remote host restrictions using TCP wrappers or other address recognition protocols. Generally, anyone seated at a terminal or workstation in the library, or on an institution's campus network, is considered a valid user.

Basic Requirements: The InfoTrac CPS client software requires its host to be a node on the internet. If the host resides behind a firewall, connections using high numbered ports (above 5000) must be enabled. Telnet and FTP access to the host from TGG's network is requested; this allows TGG support staff to assist with installation and troubleshooting.

VMS Unix
All files will be installed in subdirectories of the installer's account directory. If diskquotas are in use, 24K blocks of diskquota are requested. Installation of the client software in global memory requires 500 available global sections and 20 available global pages. All files will be installed in subdirectories of the installer's account directory. Installation requires no more than 8MB of disk space; approximately 500KB of virtual memory is recommended at run time.

Detailed instructions for download, installation and configuration of both Unix and VMS clients are available here. All builds are available via anonymous FTP at

Files names are listed below and in the installation instructions.

Y2K Upgrades Version 2.60b of the CPS client has been released to meet Y2K compliance requirements. Note that earlier versions of the client are also Y2K compliant, but may not run on compliant OS platforms.

Requirements for Y2K compliant implementations: Version 2.60b of the CPS program has been tested on Y2K compliant operating platforms. The list below provides the platform specification and the current build available for each platform. VMS (Alpha, VAX) builds are backup save sets; Unix builds are compressed tape archives (tar).
